Alan Hirzel is an executive in residence at Battery Ventures, where he advises on life-science tools and biotech platform strategy, leveraging decades of global leadership experience in building and scaling mission-critical research tools businesses. Alan is currently involved in Battery’s investment in Enzo Biochem.

Alan brings more than 20 years of executive operating experience in the life-science tools and diagnostics sector, most recently as CEO and president of Abcam plc, a provider of high-quality biological reagents and research tools for scientists worldwide. During his decade-long tenure at Abcam, he led a comprehensive transformation of the business model and innovation strategy, focused on strengthening the company’s global brand and operational footprint, culminating in its acquisition by Danaher in 2023.

Prior to Abcam, Alan was a partner at Bain & Company in London, where he advised corporate and private equity clients on growth strategy, performance improvement and merger-and-acquisition opportunities across the healthcare and life-science sectors. Earlier in his career he worked in product innovation and new-product development roles at Kraft Foods and held strategy consulting roles.

In addition to his operating leadership, Alan currently serves on the board of directors for Bio X Cell and has held other advisory and board positions in the life-science ecosystem.

Alan holds a B.S. in plant molecular biology, an M.S. in bioprocessing & food science, and an MBA from Cornell University.
