Marcus, a veteran entrepreneur and startup advisor, joined Battery as a partner in 2022. He focuses on early- and growth-stage technology investments, with an emphasis on vertical enterprise applications, fintech and data services companies. He is currently involved in Battery’s investment in Fairmatic and hyperexponential.

Prior to Battery, Marcus was the co-founder and CEO of Guidewire Software (NYSE: GWRE), which serves the global property-casualty insurance industry by providing a cloud-based, core system platform for underwriting, policy administration, billing and claims. He co-founded Guidewire in 2001 and served as the company’s CEO until 2019; he remains an independent director on Guidewire’s board.

Earlier in his career, Marcus worked as an engagement manager at McKinsey & Co. and was vice president of strategy at Ariba. He currently serves as an independent director of Checkr, Bloomreach, Bestow and Guidewire and advises several privately held technology companies. Previously, he served on the boards of technology companies MuleSoft, Opower, Clearwater Analytics, Cornerstone OnDemand and Procore Technologies.

Marcus holds an A.B. from Princeton University with highest honors and has a B.Phil. in philosophy from New College, Oxford University, which he attended as a Marshall Scholar.

He lives with his wife and the love of his life Julia in San Francisco, and is an avid player and aspiring designer of board games.
